Former Patriot Thomas Helps Pitt State to D-II Championship

Former Christ Prep Patriot Jon Thomas helped the Pittsburg State Gorillas to the NCAA Division II football championship yesterday in Florence, Alabama. Thomas, wearing number 20 for the Gorillas, had one reception for 7 yards and one rush for 8 yards.

Jon was a standout running back for the Patriots during the 2004-06 seasons. Since joining Pittsburg State's squad Jon has been a standout player at WR and as a kick returner.

Senior Profile: Grant Collison

Grant has played for Christ Prep since his freshmen year and is the son of Paul and Peggy Collison. He has played defensive tackle and several positions on the offensive line. Grant has also been involved with Civil Air Patrol for six years. At church, Grant is active in his youth group and is on the student leadership team, where he helps lead junior high small groups and volunteers with church projects. Being on a Christian football team is very important to him because of the fellowship he has with all his teammates. The friends he has made playing football are some of the closest he has. Grant is applying to the Air Force Academy and Air Force ROTC and hopes to become a pilot in the Air Force. He would like to thank his parents for their support and encouragement, the Mann family for their four years of car-pooling with him and his coaches for all their hard work.

Chargers 62 Patriots 31

The Christ Prep Patriots made a second half charge, but the Lighthouse Christian (Springfield, Mo.) Chargers answered back and broke away late to claim an impressive 62-31 win last night at Center High School in Kansas City.

The Patriots spread the scoring around, as Chris Mills, Josiah Thill and Zach Hersberger each scored one touchdown while Jack Layman added two more. Chase Roberts rounded out the scoring with a PAT kick.

The game was the season finale for CPA, which ended its season at 2-8. It was also the final game for seven Patriot seniors--Grant Collison, Zach Hersberger, Jack Layman, Jesse Mann, Chase Roberts, Shane Roberts, and Josh Yankoviz. These young men have had oustanding careers at Christ Prep and have provided exemplary character and spiritual leadership both on and off the field. Their presence will be sorely missed.

Zach Hershberger, son of Mike and Susan Hershberger, has played Christ Prep football for two years as a wide receiver, safety, and kick returner. First of all, he would like to thank God for the opportunity to play football in a Christian atmosphere. He would also like to thank his parents for everything they have sacrificed in order for him to play football and for their constant dedication of godly parenting throughout the almost 18 years of his life and also his siblings for always coming to his games to support him. He would also like to thank his teachers for preparing him academically and spiritually for college and his coaches, as well, for mentoring him not only in the area of football, but also on how to be a godly man in this ungodly world. And lastly, Zach would like to thank his teammates for demonstrating their love and commitment to him, the game of football, and most importantly to the Lord. Zach plans to earn his doctorate in physical therapy at a small Christian college and is also interested in playing football. One of his key verses is the team verse, 2 Timothy 1:7…”For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

Jack Layman, the eldest son of Dave and Beth Layman, is one of nine siblings. He has played Christ prep football for four years and has enjoyed every moment, with the exception of two- a- days. Jack played JV quarterback, but was switched to cornerback and receiver, once he made varsity. He would like to give Coach Jay a special thanks for this position switch! Football has meant a lot to him, not just for the sport, but for the friendships built along the way. Jack would like to thank every one of his coaches for volunteering so much time and effort into this football program, also for building him spiritually in his walk with Christ and encouraging him on and off the field. He would also like to thank his parents for being his number one fans, giving him a spiritual foundation at home, and encouraging him in all his pursuits. Jack also runs track for Christ prep. Other than sports, Jack and his younger brother Grant own and operate Layman Brothers lawn care and he enjoys eating at chipotle with friends! His plans for the future are to go to college, play football, and get a degree in physical therapy. His favorite verse is Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord your God with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Jesse Mann, the son of Wade and Barb Mann, has been a part of the Christ prep football program for five years. This football program has meant a lot to him as he grew in mind and spirit during his high school years. He would like to thank his coaches for investing their time in his life and teaching him to be a godly Christian. He would also like to thank his parents for training him in righteousness and encouraging him to live for Christ. Jesse has played many different positions throughout his time with the team, but his favorite positions are fullback and linebacker. The Lord has helped Jesse greatly during his high school years, He has shown Jesse humility and reminds him constantly that He is the only God and is to be glorified. One of Jesse’s favorite verses is 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

Christ Prep 41 Immaculata 24

Jesse Mann had 19 tackles and Timothy Finley passed for five touchdowns and ran for another as Christ Prep beat Immaculata 41-24 Friday night in Leavenworth, Kans. The Patriots clicked on all cylinders and got back into the win column for the second time in the 2011 season. Zach Hershberger caught three of the five touchdown passes and Jack Layman and Jesse Mann added one each.

The game might not have been as close as the score indicated as the Raiders scored 16 of their 24 points late in the game. With the win, the Patriots move to 2-6 for the year. Immaculata falls to 1-7.

Chase Roberts, the son of Brett and Elaine Roberts, has played football for Christ Prep for six years. In those years he has played nose guard, defensive tackle, defensive end, and offensive tackle, all positions on the line. This year and last year he also kicked for the team. As well as playing football, he has also wrestled with Christ Prep for two years and run track for one. He hopes to be accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy and become a Midshipman there next fall, and from there, graduate into the Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant. He would like to thank his parents for being supportive of his endeavors on the football field, as well as every other area of life through the years, and his coaches for their instruction.

Patriots Lose to Onaga 22-7

In a game of smashmouth football, the Onaga Buffaloes beat the Christ Prep Patriots 22-7 Friday night at Center High School. The Patriots scored on their first play from scrimmage on a 92 yard run by senior Jesse Mann. After Timothy Finley's ensuing PAT, however, CPA would not find the end zone again. Onaga scored two subsequent first half touchdowns and added a third in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. With the win, Onaga improves to 4-3 on the season. Christ Prep falls to 1-6.

Although CPA's ground game began promising with Mann's 92 yard run, the Patriots were limited to 112 total yards on 26 carries. Mann actually had 113 yards on 9 carries, so the remaining 15 team carries spread throughout the team resulted in negative yardage, primarily due to quarterback sacks.

The Patriots got about the same amount of yardage through the air as they did rushing. Timothy Finley was 9-17 for 134 yards with one interception. Jack Layman caught three balls for 61 yards while Zach Hersberger had four receptions for 51 yards.

Defensively, several Patriots had five or more tackles. Jesse Mann led the way with 16 stops, three assists and one sack. Regan Hurley and Grant Layman added eight tackles each while Chase Stamatis, Josh Yankoviz, and Jack Layman had five tackles a piece.

Patriots to Host Onaga

The Christ Prep Patriots will look for their second win this Friday night when they host the visiting Onaga Buffaloes. Although the 7:00 p.m. contest is a home game for CPA, it will be held at Center High School, located at 8715 Holmes Rd. in Kansas City, Mo. The venue will afford the Patriots a rare "Friday Night Lights" home game.

Onaga is 3-3 coming into the CPA matchup. The Buffaloes won big last week against Jackson Heights, holding the Cobras to 8 points while scoring 48. Christ Prep lost a close game 21-20 to the Uniontown Eagles.

Shane Roberts, the son of Brett and Elaine Roberts, has played football with Christ Prep for 6 years, and also participated in his first season of track this year. During his football career, he has played at wide receiver, offensive line, linebacker and safety. Christ Prep football has taught him many things, including leadership, perseverance, teamwork, and how to survive 2-a-days. He was taught the importance and value of hard work, preparation, and pushing his own limits. Next year, Shane plans to attend college, although he has not yet decided where. He would like to pursue a degree in sports or possibly theology. He would like to thank his parents, for their encouragement and willingness to help with laundry, and also all of his coaches, for their time, efforts and patience.

Joshua James Yankoviz, the son of Kenny and Julianne Yankoviz, has lettered on the Christ Prep football team for the past 3 years. He has participated in Christ Prep Track and Field for 2 years and will finish his third year in the spring. He is currently an orange belt in Taekwondo and will continue his training to reach black belt when the football season ends. He plans on attending college next fall and will pursue a degree in business administration. He would first, and above all, wish to thank God for the privilege of playing football for the Patriots. Joshua would like to give credit to his parents and family for always supporting him and paying for his football. Last but not least, he would like to thank his coaches for their Godly example; and his teammates for their encouragement. They are the reason he has come to love the game of football. Patriots Lose Close One to Uniontown

The Christ Prep Patriots lost a heartbreaker to the Uniontown Eagles 21-20 Saturday night at Shawnee Mission North field.

The loss spoiled the Patriots' Senior Night, which honored the team's seven seniors--Josh Yankoviz, Shane Roberts, Chase Roberts, Jesse Mann, Jack Layman, Zach Hershberger, and Grant Collison.

During the game, QB Josiah Thill rushed for three touchdowns for Christ Prep, but Uniontown's three points after touchdown were the difference in scoring as the Patriots missed both a kick attempt and a pass attempt, respectively, after each of their first two touchdowns. The Patriots also were assessed several penalties in key situations and just couldn't muster enough offense late to push through a winning touchdown.

The Patriots rolled up 266 yards on the ground on 31 carries. Jesse Mann led the Patriots with 171 yards on 14 attempts. Josiah Thill added 82 yards on 14 carries (and the three touchdowns). Thill was 11-24 passing for 80 yards and 2 interceptions. Thill hit Timothy Finley 4 times for 34 yards and connected with Jack Layman 3 times for 17 yards. Chris Mills caught two Thill balls for 11 yards. Shane Roberts and Jesse Mann had a reception each. Besides the three Thill touchdowns, Jack Layman rushed for a two point conversion to cap the scoring.

CPA Falls to Pembroke Hill

The Christ Prep Patriots ran into an explosive Pembroke Hill team Friday night, losing 40-6 to the host Raiders in Kansas City.

CPA sustained a couple of first half drives, but were unable to push the ball into the end zone. The Raiders meanwhile were effective on the ground and in the air and opened up a 26-0 lead at halftime.

The Patriots made some adjustments in the second half, but Pembroke Hill still scored 14 second half points to the Patriots' six. CPA's lone score came late in the game as Josiah Thill hit Jack Layman for a 65 yard touchdown pass.

With the loss, the Patriots fall to 1-4 for the 2011 season. Pembroke Hill improves to 4-2. The Patriots host Uniontown next Saturday evening at Shawnee Mission North field.

CPA To Play Pembroke Hill

The Christ Prep Patriots travel across town this Friday to take on the Pembroke Hill Raiders. Pembroke Hill, a Missouri Class 3 school, is 3-2 on the season and is coming off a 25-20 win against Lincoln College Prep.

The Patriots seek Friday to avenge a 2010 loss to the Raiders. CPA lost 35-21 last year in the contest held at Shawnee Mission North. The JV team also lost to the Raiders last year by a score of 27-8.

Friday's game starts at 7:00 p.m. at the school's football field, which is located at 5121 State Line Rd. in Kansas City. Stay tuned for game results

Christ Prep Falls to University Academy

The Christ Prep Patriots looked good early, but eventually succumbed to turnovers and an explosive passing attack from University Academy, falling 56-23 to the Gryphons in an afternoon matchup today at Shawnee Mission North Field.

The Patriots scored first in the contest after sustaining a long drive in the first quarter. Quarterback Josiah Thill found WR Zach Hersberger for a 12 yard catch and run. With the PAT the Patriots went up 7-0.

The Gryphons came back quickly, however, scoring a touchdown on quarterback Dimonic McKinsey's 23 yard completion to WR Brandon Bowden. University Academy added two touchdowns in the 2nd quarter sandwiched around one score for CPA. McKinsey again found Bowden, throwing a 33 yard touchdown pass. After that score Thill once again found Hershberger, this time for a 60 yard catch and run. After this score the Patriots and Gryphons were briefly tied at 14 all. However, McKinsey scored on a 1 yard run right before halftime. With the failed conversion the Gryphons took a 20-14 lead into the locker room.

The Patriots endured a difficult third quarter, turning the ball over several times. The Gryphons capitalized on practically each of these, scoring 29 3rd quarter points. All of the scores were touchdown passes--ranging from 38-60 yards--from McKinsey to WR Bryson Winfrey. The Patriots added 9 points of their own in the third quarter. Jesse Mann scored one touchdown on a 14 yard run. The Patriots also added a safety after the snap sailed over McKinsey's head and out of the back of the endzone. The scoring was too little for CPA, however, as UA led 49-23 at the end of the 3rd period. The Grypons added another TD during the last period--another McKinsey to Winfrey connection--which brought the final score to 56-23 in favor of University Academy.

Patriots to Play University Academy

The CPA Patriots will take on the University Academy Charter Gryphons tomorrow afternoon at Shawnee Mission North field. The Gryphons are 2-2 this season, winning decisively over opponents Southwest and Washington. UA's losses were fairly decisive as well as they lost to Center 35-20 and Hogan Prep 35-0.

The Patriots lost to the Gryphons last year by a score of 21-7. We'll try to have results later tomorrow afternoon. The contest begins at 1:00 p.m.

Patriots Notch First Win

The Christ Prep Patriots won their home opener 36-6 Saturday night against the Central Heights Vikings at Shawnee Mission North field.

The Patriots came out quickly against Central Heights, grinding a drive out to the Viking's 2 before fumbling. CPA regrouped during its next series, however, as QB Josiah Thill found WR Jack Layman on a 14 yard TD strike.

After another Layman touchdown run of 91 yards and a 91 yard pass from Thill to WR Zach Hersberger, the Patriots found themselves with a 22-0 halftime lead.

Christ Prep added two scores in the second half. The first, in the third quarter, was on a 9 yard Layman run. Thill once again found Hersberger in the 4th quarter, this time completing an 80 yard reception. Timothy Finley added four kicking PATs while Jack Layman scored on a 2 point conversion after the second TD.

The Vikings scored a late TD and the game ended with the Patriots on top 36-6.

The Patriots produced a balanced offensive attack during the contest. The team rushed for 236 yards on 31 carries. Layman ran only four times but produced a team-leading 105 yards. Thill ran 13 times for 59 yards while RB Jesse Mann ran 9 times for 57 yards.

The passing attack was sucessful as well. Thill, in his first start at QB, did an outstanding job, completing 8 of 13 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Thill found Hershberger three times, producing 130 yards. The other five completions were to Layman for the remaining 68 yards.

The CPA defense was tough as well. Mann had 11 tackles and two QB sacks. Hershberger had 8 tackles with an interception while LB Shane Roberts added seven tackles with a pick of his own. Cale Thomas also had seven tackles while Layman had six and Logan White five. Regan Hurley had four tackles and a fumble recovery.

Patriots to Host Vikings

The Christ Prep Patriots will host the Central Heights Vikings tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Shawnee Mission North Field. The game marks the home opener for the Patriots who are looking for their first win of the 2011 season.

Central Heights comes in to the contest at 1-1. The Vikings beat Jayhawk-Linn last week 36-12 but lost to Prairie View in week one by a score of 35-31.

The Patriots beat the Vikings last year in Richmond, Kan. by a score of 22-7. Central Heights went on to finish 2010 with a 3-7 record.

Patriots Fall to LaCrosse

The Christ Prep Patriots lost to the LaCrosse Leapords by a score of 70-13 Friday night in Chapman, Kansas. There were few bright spots for the Patriots, as the fell behind 35-0 by the end of the first quarter and were behind 48-6 at halftime. The scoring for CPA included a touchdown pass from QB Josiah Thill to WR Chris Mills and a 70 yard kickoff return by Zach Hershberger. We'll try to get some photos and stats up later in the weekend.

Patriots to Play LaCrosse Tomorrow Night

The Christ Prep Patriots travel to Chapman, Kan. tomorrow evening to take on the tough LaCrosse Leopards from LaCrosse, Kan. The game, to be held at the neutral site in Chapman, is technically LaCrosse's home game but the teams are meeting approximately half way as they did last year.

Last year's contest was played at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas and was dominated by LaCrosse as they rolled to a 55-28 win. The Leopards went on to finsh the regular season 9-0 and advanced to the 2-1A quarterfinals where they lost to eventual state champion Meade.

LaCrosse returns several key players from last year's squad, including their quarterback and one running back. In last week's opener against Larned, LaCrosse opened up a 28-0 first quarter lead on their way to a 57-14 win. The Leopards ran for 377 yards against Larned on 47 carries.

Stats Released From Sunrise Contest

Our apologies for just now getting around to posting game statistics from last Friday's contest against Sunrise....

The Patriots displayed a fairly one dimensional offensive attack last week against the Buffaloes. The running game clicked well as CPA chalked up 239 yards rushing on 39 carries (6.5 avg.) with two touchdowns. The Patriots first half touchdown was scored by Jesse Mann on a 33 yard run. Timothy Finley added a rushing touchdown in the third quarter as he ran 16 yards on a keeper. Mann led the Patriots with 124 yards on 13 carries. Finley added 73 yards on 12 carries. Jack Layman, Zach Hersberger, and Grant Layman contributed 21, 14, and 7 yards, respectively.

The Patriots passing attack was lacking throughout the contest. Quarterback Timothy Finley was 1 for 16 passing for four yards and three interceptions. His lone reception was to WR Jack Layman. Layman had another long reception called back because of a holding penalty.

Defensively the Patriots had 58 tackles, 12 assists and 2 quarterback sacks. Jack Layman and Zach Hershberger led the Patriots with nine tackles each. Jesse Mann and Shane Roberts were close behind with eight each. Chanse McCoy and Josh Yankoviz contributed five tackles a piece. Yankoviz also was credited with a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a blocked PAT. Regan Hurley contributed the Patriots lone interception as he sniffed out a screen pass and advanced the ball for good yardage. Chase Roberts also sacked the quarterback once.

The Patriots will seek to pad their stats a bit as they travel to play the LaCrosse Leopards in Chapman, Kan. this Friday evening.

Patriots Fall in Opener

The Christ Prep Patriots lost 26-13 to the Sunrise Christian Academy Buffaloes last night in Bel Aire, Kan. It was the season opener for CPA, and despite being somewhat sluggish in the first half the team took a 7-6 lead at intermission and expanded it to 13-6 early in the third quarter.

The rest of the game turned Sunrise's way, however, as the heat began to take its toll on the undermanned Patriots. CPA couldn't provide an answer for the Buffaloes crisp passing attack and failed to get anything of its own going offensively. Sunrise improved the score in its own favor to 26-13 by the end of the third quarter, which is where the score stood when the game ended.

Game highlights for the Patriots included touchdown runs by RB Jesse Mann and QB Timothy Finley. Regan Hurley (DE) contributed a key interception deep in Sunrise territory late in the game.

With the loss the Patriots fall to 0-1 as they prepare for a tough La Crosse team in next Friday's contest to be held in Chapman, Kan. Sunrise improves to 1-1 in advance of their meeting with Oklahoma Union.

Patriots Open Friday Against Sunrise

The Christ Prep Patriots open their 2011 campaign Friday evening as they travel to Bel Aire (Wichita), Kans. for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Sunrise Christian Academy Buffaloes.

Although the season opener for CPA, the game will be Sunrise's second of the year. The Buffaloes opened up last week against the Community Christian (Norman, Okla.) Royals at home, losing a close game by the score of 26-20. Sunrise stuck with the Royals during the first half, as the game was knotted at 6-all at intermission. Community Christian pulled away in the second half, however, as they scored two touchdowns in the third quarter.

Sunrise QB Zach Howell was 25-44 passing for 245 yards with two touchdowns. His favorite target was WR Bo Westerfield who had nine catches for 109 yards. Preston Atherton added eight catches for 94 yards. The Buffaloes rushed for 26 yards on 13 carries. Community Christian brought a workmanlike ground game to the contest. The Royals rushed for 284 yards on 46 carries.

Down the Sideline After a Catch

The Christ Prep Patriots traveled to Bethany, Mo. last night to compete in a four team pre-season football jamboree. The round-robin scrimmages afforded the Patriots the opportunity to test their skills against live and unfamiliar competition in a game-like format.

CPA coaches and players gave themselves mixed reviews at the conclusion of the competition. Although the evening highlighted some Patriot strengths, it also revealed some areas in need of improvement. And as the coaches discussed, acquiring a better understanding of the team's strengths and weaknesses is exactly the purpose of participating in such pre-season jamborees.

The jamboree format allows each team to run 12 offensive and 12 defensive plays against each of the other three opponents. No special teams play takes place during the scrimmages so each team runs its plays until they've completed the 12. A score, turnover, or failure to get a first down returns the ball to the offensive starting point--the 40 yard line.

Although score is not kept during the jamboree, the general consensus was that the Patriots outplayed the Maysville Wolverines, but were generally outplayed by the Trenton and South Harrison squads--both the Bulldogs. Overall, the Patriots certainly showed some bright spots against all three of their opponents, especially given the fact that only 17 players suited out for CPA, a decided disadvantage in Trenton's early evening heat and humidity.

Some statistices from the Jamboree...CPA rushed for 49 yards on 12 carries. Jesse Mann led the way with 41 of those yards carrying six times. Timothy Finley was six for 22 yards passing for 144 yards and three touchdowns while throwing three interceptions. Zach Hershberger had four receptions for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Jack Layman had one reception for 40 yards and a touchdown while Chance McCoy added another reception for 15 yards. Defensively, Jesse Mann led the way for the Patriots. Mann had five tackles and three assists while forcing and recovering a fumble and sacking the quarterback once. Zach Hersberger followed with six tackles.

Patriots to Visit Trenton for Jamboree

The Christ Prep Patriots will travel to Trenton, Mo. Friday night to participate in a four-team pre-season jamboree. The jamboree begins at 6:00 p.m. at Trenton High's C.F. Russell Stadium and will afford the Patriots their first opportunity to scrimmage live against another opponent.

The jamboree format is essentially a series of round-robin scrimmages and will provide each team an opportunity to run 12 offensive and 12 defensive plays against three opponents. Besides Trenton, Chirst Prep will go against two other Missouri schools--Maysville and South Harrison (Bethany). South Harrison and Maysville are Missouri Class 1 schools while Trenton is a Missouri Class 2 school. Both South Harrison's and Trenton's mascots are the Bulldogs while the Maysville squad is known as the Wolverines. Trenton plays an independent schedule while the other two schools participate in Missouri's Grand River Conference.

Players and Families,

The Varsity Football team will be participating in a Football Jamboree on Friday, August 19th at C.F. Russell stadium in Trenton, MO. There will be locker rooms available, so we will meet at the school parking lot no later than 4:30pm. Warm-ups begin at 5:00pm with the jamboree starting at 6:00 pm with all 4 teams on the field. (see schedule below)

We will not be taking a bus since we have very low numbers and several families already live North of where we would meet to take a bus. Therefore, we will need to either carpool or arrive at Trenton High School on time (by 4:30pm) - at 5:00pm the team will be on the field and the locker room will not be available, so make sure you're there on time.

At this point, the Yankoviz have generously offered for the team to use their van for carpooling. Coach Mark is driving the van and you will need to contact him if you would like to ride in the van. Remember first come, first served.

Admission will be $1 for ages 6 and up, with NO PASSES excepted. Proceeds from the Jamboree will go to The Joplin High School Football Program. Concession stands will be provided by the THS Booster Club and the THS Band Boosters.

Jamboree Information:

Each team gets 12 offensive plays vs. their opponent, and will start from to 40 yard-line going to the endzone.

A touchdown or a failure to reach a first down will reset the ball to the 40. All 12 plays will be run consecutively.

Patriot Day a Smashing Success

The Christ Prep Patriots concluded their first week of practice by enjoying some intense full-pad contact at the team's annual Patriot Day today at Red Bridge Baptist Church field. The team engaged in a variety of drills then worked on several offensive plays. The practice concluded with the infamous "Oklahoma Drill," followed by individual player introductions.

Patriot Day is historically a great time for Patriot families to get to know each other better and today was no exception. The team and families enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, and a potluck spread of other foods after the practice.

Saturday, August 6 marks Christ Prep Football's annual "Patriot Day." Patriot Day concludes the first week of practice and provides a time for the team to come together and demonstrate what they've learned during the first summer sessions. A practice will be held from 9:00-11:30 a.m. and will be followed by a cookout and potluck meal for the players and their families.

Patriots Endure Heat

The Christ Preparatory Academy football team returned to the practice field today for two more workouts in record high temperatures. The team continued its two-a-day routine at practices held at 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The evening practice concluded as the thermometer still topped 100 degreees.

The excessive heat did not deter the Patriots as they began learning their offensive schemes. Much of the practice was devoted to play-making for both the senior and junior high offensives.

The Patriots will continue two-a-days tomorrow. Wednesday's workouts will be the last in shorts and t-shirts as the team prepares to put on shells (helmets and shoulder pads) at Thursday's practice. Friday's practice will be the first in full gear.

Patriots Hit Field for Two-A-Days

Approximately 30 Christ Prep Patriot football players hit the Red Bridge Baptist Church field at 6:30 a.m. this morning as the team begain the 2011 campaign with its first two-a-day workout. The morning's practice was primarily devoted to conditioning, as the team participated in various station drills, with a brief introduction to offensive strategy.

A highlight of the practice for the CPA squad was the opportunity to hear from one of the team's former stars--Josh Burton. Josh, a 2010 graduate who is currently playing at Highland (Kans.) Community college, addressed the team at the end of the morning practice. He shared a favorite verse from the book of Deuteronomy which he credited with helping him deal with fear during his high school football career. Josh also encouraged the team to simply enjoy the game of football.

Patriots Win Over Chargers 41-20

In a football game that was closer than the final score indicated, the Christ Prep Patriots outlasted the Lighthouse Christian (Springfield, Mo.) Chargers 41-20 Saturday afternoon at Pleasant Hope H.S. in Pleasant Hope, Mo. The contest featured six Patriot touchdowns--four by WR Jack Layman and one each from RB Jesse Mann and QB Darren Wallace. Key defensive plays late in the game sealed the CPA victory.

The Patriots looked like they were going to make the game a laugher early on as they jumped to a 27-0 lead. The Chargers scored one touchdown late in the first half then two others unanswered in the second half to bring the score to 27-20. The Chargers were then driving when they fumbled the ball to the Patriots. CPA capitalized on the turnover and pulled away for a two touchdown lead. After an Ezra Boyd interception on the ensuing possession, Christ Prep put one more TD on the board and pulled away to the final score of 41-20.

With the victory, the Patriots finish 7-3 for the 2010 campaign. Lighthouse falls to 5-6 but will have the opportunity to improve upon that mark as the team heads to Panama City Beach, Fla. for the National Homeschool Football Championships.

Patriots to Conclude Season Against Lighthouse Christian

The Christ Prep Patriots conclude their 2010 campaign tomorrow against the Lighthouse Christian Academy Chargers in a 1:30 p.m. contest to be held at Pleasant Hope High School in Pleasant Hope, Mo.

The Chargers are 5-5 on the season so obviously are looking for a victory so that they can finish with a winning season. Christ Prep, although assured of a winning season, seeks to improve to 7-3 with a road win.

Both teams have been fairly evenly matched over the last couple of years. Lighthouse won 50-36 against the Patriots in 2008 during a home contest held at Willard High School. Last year, CPA got revenge by edging the Chargers 24-21 with a Darren Wallace field goal in overtime. Needless to say emotions will run high tomorrow as the two teams have developed an important rivalry over the last few years.

Although the varsity contest starts at 1:30 p.m., a junior high game between the two schools will be held prior to the varsity matchup. The starting time for that game is set for 11:30 a.m. at the Pleasant Hope field.

Pleasant Hope is located about 4 miles east of Missouri 13 Highway on Route 215. Route 215 is located about 10-12 miles south of Bolivar, Mo.

With many apologies, I'm finally getting around to posting some of those Senior Day photos. I think I said something Saturday about posting them Sunday, but then time got away from me and it is now Thursday. Please forgive my tardiness!

The seniors and their familes represented CPA well last Saturday. What excellent leadership these young men (and one woman) showed during this and previous seasons.

Chiefs' Punter Colquitt Visits Patriots Practice

Kansas City Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt made a surprise visit last night at the Christ Prep Patriots' practice. Colquitt arrived just before the Patriots took the field and spent the better part of the evening observing CPA's practice and chatting with players and coaches.

Colquitt spend a good deal of time addressing the Patriots as a group. He discussed how God had used adversity in his life to draw him back to a closer relationship with the Lord. He also discussed the importance of using his position as an NFL player as a platform for sharing his faith. Colquitt challenged the Patriots to take seriously the word "Christ" which is on the front of their practice jerseys and to live in a manner that brings glory to God. He also talked to them about honoring their parents and living lives of strong character.

Colquitt talked about how he came to football relatively late in life. Although his father Craig was also a punter in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dustin grew up playing soccer and basketball and only played football during his senior year in high school when the football team's kicker was injured prior to the season opener. Dustin then handled the kicking and punting duties which eventually led him to spurn a soccer scholarship to Brown University and instead to walk on as a punter at the University of Tennessee. The rest as they say, is history. Dustin went on to have a standout career with the Tennessee Volunteers and was drafted in the third round of the NFL draft in 2005. Currently he boasts a 43.9 yard per game average.

Patriots Beat Wabaunsee 41-0

The Christ Prep Patriots beat the Wabaunsee Chargers 41-0 today at Shawnee Mission North Field. The contest was the last home game for the CPA and was the team's annual Senior Day. With the win the Patriots are assured of a winning season as the team moved to 6-3 for the campaign.

Christ Prep rode a well balanced attack in chalking up the win. The Patriots scored first half touchdowns on a Jesse Mann 2 yard run and a 15 yard TD strike from Darren Wallace to Jack Layman. Layman also added a two point conversion on a fake PAT kick. The scoring might have been worse in the first half but the Patriots suffered three turnovers--two interceptions and a fumble--so the scoring was limited to 14-0 at intermission.

CPA hit its stride in the second half, breaking out for another 27 points. During the 3rd Quarter the Patriots pushed in TDs on runs from Wallace and Jared Nield of 1 yard and 3 yards, respectively. One Wallace PAT brought the lead to 27-0 at the end of three periods.

During the 4th quarter the Patriots continued their offensive showcase as Jared Nield scored on a 30 yard run, his longest of the day. Wallace's PAT put the score at 34-0 which ushered in the Patriot JV to wrap up the game.

The JV took over where the varsity left off. Newcomer Tyler Sorrell capped off the CPA scoring with a 1 yard run late in the game. Timothy Finley added the PAT. After a pass intcerception by Zach Hershberger, the Patriots ran out the clock and sealed the victory at 41-0.

Christ Prep amassed over 500 yards total offense en route to today's victory. The Patriots rushed for 404 yards on 58 carries--a 6.97 yard average. Running backs Jesse Mann and Jared Nield turned in almost identical performances. Both had 17 carries with Mann edging Nield in yardage 143-140. Quarterback Darren Wallace rushed for 61 yards on 13 attempts. Each of the three backs had one rushing touchdown. Freshman Tyler Sorrell added another rushing touchdown and had 15 yards on four carries.

The Patriot passing game came through in key situations. Quarterback Darren Wallace was 6-11 for 100 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Two of Wallace's completions were for touchdowns. One was for 15 yards to Jack Layman; the other a 30 yard connection to Nield. Timothy Finley, in relief duty, was 1-1 for a 12 yard completion to Josiah Thill. Besides the receptions mentioned above, Wallace connected with Zach Hersberger and Timothy Finley for catches of eight and four yards, respectively. Jack Layman caught two other Wallace passes as well. Layman totaled three receptions for 58 yards.

Defensively the Patriots held the Chargers scoreless while tallying four interceptions. The four Patriot picks were delivered by Grant Layman, Ezra Boyd, Darren Wallace and Zach Hershberger. Michael Force once again led the Patriots in tackles. Force brought down seven Chargers on his own while assisting six more times. Ezra Boyd added six solo tackles while Grant Collison added three for the Patriot defense.

With the win, Christ Prep improves to 6-3 on the season while Wabaunsee falls to 1-8. The Patriots conclude the 2010 season next Saturday afternoon in Pleasant Hope, Mo. as they take on the Lighthouse Christian Academy Chargers in a 1:30 p.m. contest. The varsity game follows the junior high game which begins at 11:30 a.m.

Patriots to Host Wabaunsee

The Christ Prep Patriots will host the Wabaunsee Chargers this Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. contest at Shawnee Mission North Field. The game will be CPA's last home game of the year and will feature the annual Senior Day halftime festivities.

Wabaunsee High School, located in Alma, Kansas, makes the trip east with a 1-7 season record (0-5 in the Mid-East Conference). The Chargers lost last week to the Onaga Buffaloes by a score of 36-7. Christ Prep beat Onaga 41-30 on October 15. Onaga is the only common opponent this season for the Chargers and Patriots.

The Patriots ensured themselves of at least a .500 season record with last week's 53-13 win over Immaculata. CPA, now 5-3, will seek to secure a winning season this week with a victory over Wabaunsee.

The Christ Prep Patriots demonstrated a well balanced attack today as the team won easily 53-13 over the Immaculata Raiders.

The play of the day came early in the game from an unlikely but deserving source. Immaculata received the opening kickoff but when faced with fourth down on its first possession chose to go for a first down even though they were deep in their own territory. The Raiders got the first down, but during their very next series LB Ezra Boyd hit the Immaculata QB in the backfield, forcing his pass into the open arms of DL Austin White who promptly returned the interception for a 33 yard touchdown. The Patriot sideline and fans celebrated wildly after witnessing a rare score from a lineman. Commented Austin after the game: "All of a sudden I realized I was in the end zone with the ball in my hands."

The Patriots added two more touchdowns in the first quarter. The first was a 1 yard TD run by Jesse Mann; the second a 79 yard rush from QB Darren Wallace. Wallace made all three PAT attempts in the first quarter and the period ended with the Patriots up 21-0.

Christ Prep added another touchdown in the second quarter on a 22 yard run from Jared Nield. The PAT attempt failed and the Patriots took a 27-0 lead to the locker room at intermission.

The Patriots broke loose in the third quarter with 26 more points as Wallace connected on 30 yard-plus touchdown strikes to Zach Hersberger and Jack Layman and Jesse Mann found the end zone on two more rushing TDs of 1 and 30 yards, respectively. One Wallace and one Timothy Finley PAT rounded out the third period scoring.

The Patriot JV saw some action late in the third quarter and during the entire fourth quarter. Immaculata broke through the end zone twice during the fourth period and added an extra point to bring their total scoring to 13 points for the day.

Final Score: Patriots 53 Raiders 13.

With the win Christ Prep improves to 5-3 for the campaign as the team prepares for next week's final home game--senior day--against Wabaunsee (Kans.) at a 1:00 p.m. contest at SM North Field.

After traling 24-21 at halftime, the Christ Prep Patriots hunkered down defensively and exploded for three second half touchdowns on their way to a 41-30 victory over the Onaga Buffaloes Friday night in Onaga, Kans.

CPA Travels to Onaga

A pair of .500 teams face off tomorrow night as the Christ Prep Patriots travel to Onaga, Kans. for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Onaga H.S. Buffaloes. Onaga is coming off two straight victories after starting the season 1-3. The Buffaloes evened their record by winning 51-24 against Jackson Heights.

Christ Prep won 41-21 against Uniontown last week after dropping games the previous two weeks against University Academy and Pembroke Hill. The Patriots seek to move back to a winning record for the first time in almost a month.

Onaga is located north and west of Topeka and north and east against of Manhattan. The Buffaloes compete in the Twin Valley Conference. All three of the team's losses have occurred in conference play.

Christ Prep Beats Uniontown 41-21

The Christ Prep Patriots broke loose for three second half touchdowns on their way to beating the Uniontown Eagles 41-21 last night in a high school football contest held at Uniontown, Kans.

Christ Prep took an early 7-0 on a 64 yard Wallace run and PAT. Early in the second quarter, a 24 yard Nield touchdown run added to the CPA lead. After another Wallace PAT, the Patriots led 14-0. Christ Prep threatened to put the game away on its next series, but on third-and-goal at the five a delay of game penalty and then an intentional grounding call pushed the Patriots back and they ended up turning the ball over on downs. Uniontown capitalized on the situation and promptly rattled off a couple of touchdowns on a counter play and pass play and tied the game 14 all. Fortunately the Patriots sustained one last first half drive, capping it off with a 4 yard Wallace keeper which allowed the Patriots to take a 21-14 lead at the half.

Uniontown would not go away easily as the Eagles scored another touchdown on a 10 yard run at the 7:03 mark in the third quarter. The Uniontown PAT evened the scored at 21-21.

The Patriots then got going, utilizing a little razzle-dazzle on the ensuing kickoff. Jack Layman took a pitch on a reverse play and ran 91 yards for a quick CPA touchdown. The PAT was wide left and CPA led 27-21. Jesse Mann added another TD in the third quarter on a 13 yard run while Wallace found Layman on 6 yard passing strike in the fourth quarter. Wallace's PATs on both scores brought the Patriots to 41-21, the final score.

The Patriots returned to their strong running game in notching the win. Christ Prep rolled up a total of 375 yards rushing on 43 carries for an average of 8.72 yards per try. Jared Nield led all rushers with 141 yards on 17 carries. Darren Wallace and Jesse Mann were close behind, totalling 118 yards (8 rushes) and 116 yards (18 rushes), respectively. Wallace was 3-7 passing for 41 yards and one TD with no interceptions. Jack Layman caught two Wallace passes for 18 yards (1 TD) while Timothy Finley had one reception for 13 yards.

Although the pass defense was at time suspect, the Patriots showed strong resistance to Uniontown's running game. The linebacking corps once again were the leading tacklers as Michael Force and Jacob Bronars had 18 and 12 tackles, respectively. Force added a sack and a QB pressure. Josh Yankoviz provided strong penetration from the defensive line, getting four tackles, some in the backfield. Other notable tacklers were Josiah Thill (4), Ezra Boyd (8), and Zach Hersberger with five.

The win evens the Patriots record at 3-3 while Uniontown falls to 2-4. Christ Prep gets back into action next Friday night, traveling to Onaga, Kans. for another 7:00 p.m. contest.

Patriots Travel to Uniontown

The Christ Prep Patriots travel to Uniontown, Kansas Friday for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Uniontown High School Eagles. Both teams are 2-3 and will seek to get back to .500 with a victory this week.

Uniontown takes a two game winning streak into the contest. The wins, both shutouts, were gained September 24 against Joplin Mo. McAuley Catholic (27-0) and October 1 vs. Northeast (Arma, Kans.) by a score of 52-0. Christ Prep seeks to reverse a two-game skid after dropping games the last two weeks against University Academy and Pembroke Hill, both Kansas City, Mo. schools.

Both the Eagles and Patriots appear to be fairly evenly matched, although the two have no common opponents by which much information can be gained. Uniontown is ranked number 224 in the State of Kansas by MaxPreps. CPA is ranked number 172 by that organization.

Uniontown is located just east of Ft. Scott, Kans. The Eagles compete in the Three Rivers Conference with Oswego and Northeast (Arma).

The Christ Prep Patriots scored two fourth quarter touchdowns but it was too little, too late, as CPA fell 35-21 to the visiting Pembroke Hill Raiders.

The Patriots sputtered early, losing two fumbles and being penalized in key situaitons. Pembroke Hill capitalized on the Patriots miscues and CPA found themselves down 22-0 by the end of the first quarter. CPA fought back in the second quarter. After a Raider field goal, the Patriots got on the board on a 57 yard halfback pass from Jared Nield to Jack Layman with just under a minute left in the first half. Unfortunately the Raiders quickly countered as QB Jacob Gerson found David Kipke in the end zone on a 42 yard pass play as time expired. The half ended with Pembroke Hill up 32-7

The Patriots played much better in the second half, scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns and limiting the Raiders to just three points on a Kipke 27 yard field goal. CPA scored on a Darren Wallace 1 yard keeper and a Wallace to Zach Hershberger 11 yard scoring strike. The latter score was set up by an excellent Wallace onside kick.

Offensively, Jared Nield led CPA rushes with 118 yards on 14 carries. Wallace had 48 yards on 17 carries and Jesse Mann ran for 37 yards on 113 tries. Wallace was 3 for 21 passing for 41 yards and one interception. Wallace also added three PATs. The Patriots fumbled three times, losing all of them.

The defense was led by Michael Force and Jacob Bronars with 13 and 10 tackles, respectively. Jack Layman contributed another eight tackles while LB Ezra Boyd added seven. Bronars also added an interception while DL Josh Yankoviz had a QB sack.

After the loss the Patriots fall to 2-3 while the Raiders improve to 4-2. Christ Prep goes back on the road next week as the team travels to Uniontown for a 7:00 p.m. contest against Uniontown H.S. Meanwhile the Patriot JV will travel to Pembroke Hill for a Monday afternoon contest.

Patriots to Host Pembroke Hill

The Christ Prep Patriots return to their home field to host the Pembroke Hill Raiders in a 7:00 p.m. contest to be held Saturday evening, October 2 at Shawnee Mission North field. Christ Prep is 2-2 and seeking to move into winning territory at mid-point in the season. Pembroke Hill is trying to stay in positive territory as it takes its 3-2 record into the game.

CPA is coming off a tough 21-7 loss to University Academy while Pembroke Hill seeks to build momentum gained in an easy 69-8 victory over Lincoln Prep last week. Pembroke Hill's other wins came over Renaissance Academy (28-14) and Northeast (60-0). The Raiders' losses have come at the hands of Center (21-13) and John Burroughs of St. Louis (34-14). Neither Christ Prep nor Pembroke Hill have played common opponents at this point in the season, although both the Raiders and CPA's opponent last week--University Academy--lost to Center. University Academy lost by a score of 35-7 in the season opener.

Pembroke Hill, located at 400 W. 51st Street in Kansas City, is a Missouri Class 3 school and plays an independent schedule.

Patriots Fall 21-7

The Christ Prep Patriots battled hard but fell 21-7 to a very athletic University Academy Gryphons team this afternoon in a football game played at Center High School in south Kansas City. CPA dodged a number of bullets in the first half as several Gryphon big plays were called back because of penalties.
The Patriots lone score came on a 12 yard touchdown pass from Darren Wallace to Jack Layman. Defensive highlights included pass interceptions by Zach Hersberger (2) and Wallace as well as some excellent tackling by the Patriot linebacker corps and defensive line.

Patriots down 13-7 at Half

The Christ Prep Patriots are down 13-7 to University Academy in a football contest being played today at Center High School in South Kansas City. University Academy's explosive offensive was held in check by penalties in the first half and the Patriots managed to tie the game with just over 1 minute left in the second quarter. The Gryphons then received the kickoff and promptly marched 80 yards down the field on a drive capped off by a touchdown pass with :04 left on the clock. The extra point try was no good.

Patriots to Play University Academy Saturday

The Christ Prep Patriots travel to Center High School to play the University Academy Gryphons in a 2:00 p.m. contest Saturday. University Academy is coming off a 48-31 loss last week to Hogan Prep. The Gryphons stand 2-2 on the season. Christ Prep will try to build on its 22-7 win last Friday at Central Heights as the Patriots seek to move to 3-1.

University Academy has come on strong during the last couple of seasons. Last year the Gryphons were 9-3 and made it to the second round of the Missouri Class 1 playoffs where the team lost to Tipton 49-7. The Gryphons and Patriots have not met at the varsity level for at least three years, although both teams' JV squads faced off last season. That game went to triple overtime where University Academy pulled out a stunning 13-7 win.

This season University Academy's two wins came against Northeast (45-0) and Washington (15-6). The Gryphons' other loss was at the hands of Center 35-7.

Saturday's game is a home game for University Academy, which plays its home games at Center High School. Center's field is located at 8715 Holmes Rd. in south Kansas City, Missouri.

JV Prevails at Central Heights

The Christ Prep Patriots made a goal line stand during the game's final two minutes and prevailed 7-6 over the Central Heights Vikings in a JV matchup in Richmond, Kansas last night.

The JV contest with Central Heights was the first opportunity for many of the Patriots to see some game action this year. They did not disappoint. Although the game was not an offensive showcase, the Patriots managed to score just enough points to secure the victory. After trailing the Vikings 6-0 at halftime, The Patriots' got it going in the third quarter on a 55-yard run by Ezra Boyd. Boyd's score brought the Patriots even with Central Heights then Timothy Finley's extra point put the Patriots ahead 7-6 for a lead they would not relinguish.

Tyler Sorrell made two touchdown saving tackles for the Patriots, the last one allowing the Patriots to make their goal line stand. Jonathan Kahn had an excellent pass reception in the fourth quarter. All in all it was a great opportunity for many of the guys to put into action the things they've been learning so far this season.

The JV returns to action next Monday at University Academy.

Patriots Defeat Central Heights 22-7

The Christ Prep Patriots overcame an early deficit on their way to defeating the Central Heights Vikings 22-7 tonight in Richmond, Kansas. The Patriots received the opening kickoff but were sluggish in their first possession, finding themselves pinned deep in their own territory where they were forced to punt. The Vikings then established the run early and marched about 60 yards in several plays, finally punching the ball into the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

The Patriots were still in a rut early in the second quarter as they found themselves pinned deep in their own territory after a Central Heights punt. Starting at the 3 yard line, CPA drove 97 yards in just a handful of plays, the most impressive a 76 yard run by RB Jared Nield. Darren Wallace then punched through the end zone on a 4-yard keeper.

The Patriots made several defensive adjustments in the second quarter which seemed to confuse the Vikings running attack. At the same time, Christ Prep kept clicking offensively as Jared Nield scored on a 10-yard run. After the Patriots recovered a Wallace onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, CPA drove 40-plus yards but was stopped just short of the end zone. The Patriots then settled for a 25-yard Wallace field goal which put them up 15-6 at intermission.

Both teams by-and-large treaded possessions throughout most of the second half, the exception being Jesse Mann's 4-yard run late in the third quarter. Wallace then added the extra point which put the Patriots up 22-7, a lead they would hold until the end of the game.

The Patriots once again had a strong showing offensively with the running game. Nield gained 123 yards on 13 carries while Mann ground out 62 yards on ten tries. Wallace had 12 rushes for 31 yards. Wallace was 3 of 9 passing for 46 yards. Jack Layman was the recipient of two Wallace passes while Nield caught the other (a 27 yard screen pass).

Defensively the Patriots made key adjustments which halted the Vikings running games. Strong individual performances were turned in by linebackers Michael Force (15 tackles and one sack) Jacob Bronars (ten tackles). Ezra Boyd, Logan Newson, and Jack Layman added six tackles of their own while Drew Langston delivered a key sack while Wallace provided a timely pass interception. Zach Hershberger provided 39 return yards on two kickoffs and a punt.

With tonight's win the Patriots improve to 2-1 while the Vikings fall to 1-2. The Christ Prep varsity gets back into action next Saturday, September 25 when they will make a short trip across town to play University Academy in a 2:00 p.m. contest to be held at Center High School in Kansas City. The CPA JV travels back to Central Heights for a 4:30 p.m. contest on this Monday, September 20.

Patriots Travel to Central Heights on Friday

The Christ Prep Patriots will travel to Richmond, Kansas Friday to play a 7:00 p.m. game against the Central Heights Vikings. Both teams are 1-1 but Central Heights is coming off a 34-12 victory over Jayhawk-Linn while the Patriots are trying to overcome a 55-28 loss at the hands of the La Crosse Leapords.

Central Heights is coming off of a 4-6 season in 2009 where the Vikings' 2-3 conference record placed them fourth in the Pioneer League (Osawatomie, Anderson County, Wellsville, Central Heights, Prairie View, and Jayhawk-Linn). During the 2009 campaign the Vikings scored 152 points while allowing 241. Max Preps ranks Central Heights 205th among Kansas high school programs.

Patriots Fall 55-28 to La Crosse Leopards

The La Crosse Leopards outplayed the Christ Prep Patriots and came away with a 55-28 victory last night in a contest held at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas.

Things did not go well for the CPA from the very beginning as the Leopards returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. After a two-point conversion the Patriots found themselves quickly down 8-0.

The Patriots showed some offensive promise early, as Darren Wallace found Zach Hershberger for a 53 yard touchdown strike on CPA's opening drive. La Crosse countered with a sustained drive on its next possession and capped it off with a 11 yard touchdown run.

Christ Prep then ground out another drive of its own, culminating in a 4 yard Wallace run. This tied the score 14-all, but that's the closest the Patriots would get the rest of the evening. La Crosse once again returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. The Leopards then really got rolling, frustrating the Patriots defensively and doing essentially what they pleased when they had the ball. The Leopards scored three more touchdowns and a safety and took a 42-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The second half saw each team score two touchdowns, but the Leopards scored both of there's first on runs of about 42 and 59 yards, respectively. These scores forced the Patriots into a running clock situation, which gave them little time to get much going. The Patriots did manage two late fourth quarter touchdowns on Wallace runs of around 10 and one yards. These scores brought the Patriots to within 55-28, which was the final score.

Next week the Patriots will take their 1-1 record to Richmond, Kans. to play the Central Heights Vikings, who were 34-12 winners last night over Jayhawk-Linn. Central Heights is 1-1, losing a close game last week to Prairie View.

Patriots to Face LaCrosse Leopards Friday Night

A pair of unbeaten teams square off this Friday evening as the Christ Prep Patriots take on the La Crosse Leopards at a neutral site—Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kans. The Patriots and Leopards are both 1-0 and are coming off impressive performances last weekend.

CPA won its opener 54-33 against the Sunrise Christian Academy Buffaloes last Saturday night. The previous evening, La Crosse won 51-6 over the Larned Indians in a game where La Crosse's varsity was pulled by halftime.

La Crosse is coming off a 7-3 season which saw them win the Central Prairie Conference with a 2-0 record. According to MaxPreps, the Leopards were ranked 133rd among Kansas high school football programs. The team scored 301 points during the 2009 season while holding opponents to 232. The 2010 team returns last season's leading rusher Marcus Moeder, who averaged 152 yards per and 9.4 points per game. Quarterback Tayler Stull also returns. Stull threw for over 60 yards per game during the 2009 campaign.

La Crosse is located in Rush County in west-central Kansas. The Leopards will travel a little over 100 miles east to Lindsborg to play the Patriots at Bethany College's Philip Anderson Field. The stadium, home of Bethany's "Fighting Swedes," features an all-weather playing surface and seats approximately 2,500. It should prove to be an excellent venue for the CPA-La Crosse matchup. Patriots Run to Victory Over Sunrise

The Christ Prep Patriots amassed over 600 yards total offense en route to a 54-33 victory last night over the Sunrise Christian Academy Buffaloes at Shawnee Mission North field.

The Patriots offense got going early as senior QB Darren Wallace scored two first-quarter touchdowns on runs of 44 and six yards. Junior RB Jesse Mann added a run of 7 yards as the first quarter ended with the Patriots up 21-7. Senior RB Jared Nield added another second quarter touchdown on a 1 yard run and the first half ended with the Patriots leading 28-13.

After halftime things really got going for both teams as the third quarter saw CPA scoring three touchdowns while Sunrise pushed across the end zone twice. The Patriots scored first as Nield found junior WR Jack Layman on a 23 yard scoring strike on a perfectly executed halfback pass. Nield and Wallace then added runs of 2 yards and 68 yards, respectively and the third quarter ended with Christ Prep up 48-27. The teams traded fourth quarter touchdowns with the Patriots scoring coming on a 22 yard touchdown pass from Wallace to Layman. Final score 54-33.

The Patriots delivered a well-rounded and explosive offensive performance. Christ Prep totaled 478 yards rushing on 54 carries for an average gain of almost 9 yards per carry. The Patriots threw for 125 yards on five attempts. Individually, Wallace rushed for 222 yards on 18 carries (12.33 yard average) while Mann and Nield ran for 131 and 123 yards, respectively. Nield had 19 rushes and averaged about 6.5 yards per carry while Mann carried 16 times, averaging 8 yard per attempt. Wallace was 4-13 passing (3 to Layman; one to Timothy Finley; two INT) for 99 yards while Nield was 1-1 (to Layman) for 23 yards. Besides the scoring mentioned above, Timothy Finley converted on 5 PAT attempts while Wallace added one.

Sunrise turned in an impressive offensive performance of its own. Senior QB Andrew Westerfield ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more while keeping the Patriot secondary guessing all night. Sunrise, in its first year playing 11-man football, showed few difficulties in its transition from 8-man play.

The Patriot defense delivered key plays at key moments throughout the game. Three Patriots, Nield, Layman, and junior safety Zach Hershberger , intercepted Westerfield passes. Two of these occurred while the Buffaloes were in Patriot territory

The Patriots linebacker corps delivered some brutal hits throughout the game. Senior LB Michael Force led Patriot tacklers with 11. Freshman LB Ezra Boyd added eight tackles while senior LB Jacob Bronars added six. Nield, senior LB Will Willis and senior safety Josiah Marischler turned in five tackles each. Bronars had one sack and one forced fumble.

With last night's win, the Patriots open the season 1-0 while the Buffaloes fall to 0-2. This week Sunrise travels to Canton-Galva while the Patriots meet Lacrosse at a neutral site--Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas.

Patriots Lead Sunrise at Halftime

The Christ Prep Patriots took a 28-13 halftime lead into the locker room in their season opener against Sunrise Christian Academy this evening at Shawnee Mission North field.Darren Wallace scored two first quarter touchdowns on quarterback keepers while RB Jesse Mann added another. Senior RB Jared Nield added another 2Q TD on a one-yard run. After scoring a first quarter touchdown, Sunrise added a second touchdown on a short pass as the half expired. The PAT was blocked and the half ended with the Patriots ahead 28-13.

Opponent Profile: Sunrise Christian Academy Buffaloes

The excitement is building this week as the Christ Prep Patriots make final preparations for the team's 2010 opener Saturday night at Shawnee Mission North field. CPA's opponent for the 7:00 p.m. contest will be the Sunrise Christian Academy Buffaloes from Wichita, Kans.

The Buffaloes bring a 0-1 record into the matchup with Christ Prep after falling 34-20 in their opener last week against Community Christian of Norman, Oklahoma. Although Christ Prep has not played the Buffaloes in the recent past, they have a history in the Kansas Christian Athletic Association's (KCAA) 8-Man football league. Sunrise is making its first appearance this year in 11-Man competition after almost ten years of play in 8-Man football. CPA made that same transition in 2006.

"We look forward to the challenge this Saturday night in facing a tough Christ Prep team," said Sunrise Head Coach Trey Hall. Hall, in his fourth year at the helm of the Sunrise program, believes his team has a very strong work ethic but wonders whether it has the depth to compete at the 11-man level.

“We have a young team—we graduated nine seniors from last year’s team,” said Hall. “We return our quarterback (Andrew Westerfield) as well as one running back, a starting safety, a defensive end, and a linebacker,” he said.

The move from 8-Man to 11-Man football has been one toward which Sunrise had been looking for some time. “We always knew that this would be the year we started the transition to 11-Man football with the goal to become strictly 11-Man,” said Hall.

The move to 11-Man has seemed to be a natural progression for the Buffaloes under Hall’s leadership, as the team’s record has improved steadily over the past three years. After 3-6 and 7-3 seasons in 2007 and 2008, respectively, the Buffaloes broke out during the 2009 campaign, going undefeated in 11 tries. The team also claimed the KCAA Championship for the first time in school history.

While important, football is not foremost in the minds of Hall as he mentors his team. “We try to teach our young men to strive for the final words to be ‘well done thy good and faithful servant,’ ” said Hall. As Hall looks toward Saturday’s game, he concluded, “We will bring our whole hearts!”

We're approximately 5 1/2 days away from the opening kickoff of the Christ Prep Patriots' 2010 season. Saturday's opener is against Sunrise Christian Academy of Wichita. Sunrise will be competing for the first time in 11-man football after several successful years playing an 8-man format.

The action begins at 7:00 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 4) at Shawnee Mission North field, located at 7401 Johnson Drive (near the SW Corner of Johnson Drive and Metcalf) in Overland Park, Kansas. Stay tuned this week as we preview this matchup.

Friday Night Lights

The Christ Prep Patriots got their first test of the 2010 season Friday night at the South Harrison Jamboree in Bethany, Mo. CPA's coaching staff was fairly pleased with the effort as the team clicked in most phases of the game.

The Jamboree featured a round-robin format with four teams competing in alternating 24 play scrimmages. Christ Prep competed against the South Harrison Bulldogs (the host school), the Trenton Bulldogs, and the Maysville Wolverines.

By all accounts Christ Prep came out on top for the evening. CPA scored one touchdown against South Harrison and scored two against each of the other two schools. The Patriots gave up one touchdown in each of the three scrimmages. Officially Christ Prep's record for the evening was 2-0-1 although the "tie" against South Harrison was broken in the Patriot's favor as CPA outgained the Bulldogs in total yards.

The five Patriot touchdowns were divided fairly well between running and passing plays. Senior QB Darren Wallace connected with WR Jack Layman for a couple of 35 yard scoring strikes--one against South Harrison; the other against Maysville. Senior RB Jared Nield rushed for two long (35 yard) touchdowns--one each against Trenton and Maysville--while junior RB Jesse Mann ran for another 30 yard touchdown against Trenton. Wallace connected on several other passes during the Jamboree. The recipients of those tosses were Zach Hersberger, Jared Nield, Jack Layman and Timothy Finley (2).

Defensively the Patriots showed well. Outstanding plays were delivered by the CPA linebacker corps of Jacob Bronars, Michael Force, Jared Nield, and Ezra Boyd. Will Willis, Jack Layman, Zach Hershberger, and Grant Layman, among others, were also observed making strong tackles.

Overall the coaching staff felt like the Patriots performed much better than in last year's Jamboree which was held at Graceland University in Lamoni, Ia. And although the evening was definitely not perfect (a couple of turnovers), the night gave the team a boost as it prepares for its September 4th opener against Sunrise Christian Academy.

Some other Jamboree notes....

The Patriots were by far the smallest team numerically at the Jamboree. CPA dressed just over 25 guys while the other teams suited out between 34 and 58.
The Jamboree format did not allow for any special teams (kicking game) plays nor did it penalize the teams for turnovers (fumbles lost and interceptions did not switch the defense to offense)
The three other Jamboree schools are members of the Missouri State High School Activities Assn. (MSHSAA). South Harrison and Maysville compete in Class 1 while Trenton competes in Class 2.

Patriots Make Final Preparations for Jamboree

The CPA Patriots spent Thursday evening making final preparations for tomorrow night's appearance in the South Harrison Jamboree in Bethany, Missouri. The team went through its typical pre-game drills and ran plays in "shells," which consists of full gear except the players wear shorts instead of their regular football pants with pads.

Jamborees are held annually in August at various high schools and afford an opportunity for the teams to "tune-up" before regular season play. They provide the high school equivalent to the NFL's preseason games.

Tomorrow's Jamboree will operate in the typical format. Four teams will take turns playing each other in a round robin format. Each team will get 12 plays on offense and 12 on defense. No special teams (kickoffs, punts, field goals, extra points) play will be held--just offensive and defensive scrimmaging. Tomorrow's play for CPA will unfold as follows:

1st scrimmage period: CPA vs. South Harrison (Bethany)

3rd scrimmage period: CPA vs. Trenton

5th scrimmage period: CPA vs. Maysville

The opposing teams look to be strong and should prove to be good tests for the Patriots as Coach David Wallace and staff try to assess their strengths and weaknesses in advance of the team's September 4 opener against Sunrise Christian Academy of Wichita.

Patriots Endure Heat

The story of the week for the Christ Prep Patriots football team has been the oppressive heat in which the team has had to practice. Each afternoon this week the thermometer has been right around 100 degrees when the Patriots have taken the field at 5:45 p.m. Fortunately the tall trees on the west end of the Red Bridge Baptist Church practice field begins to offer the players some significant shade by about 7:00 p.m. when the guys get into their scrimmage mode.
Some major relief came yesterday when a significant storm blew through the area at about 6:30 p.m. Temperatures dropped by about 25 degrees in a period of 15 minutes as the storm came by. The guys welcomed the rain and were only forced to shelter when thunder and lightning made itself known. Once the storm blew through the thermometer inched back into the 80's which still offered a welcome change for the young men.

Temperatures are expected to remain hot until Saturday morning which promises to begin a transition toward more moderate conditions.

Please pray for the Patriots as they continue to prepare for the upcoming season. Please pray for the young men that are sick or injured. Please also pray for protection and safety and bonding for the guys as they jell into a cohesive unit. Please pray that they would build endurance in the midst of the heat and humidity. Last but not least pray that they would glorify God through this sport of football!

Patriot Day a Success

The annual Christ Prep “Patriot Day” was held today at Red Bridge Baptist Church and by all indications the day was a great success. The CPA football team got to show off in front of a large crowd of parents and supporters during a morning scrimmage and contact drills during the event, which each year marks the culmination of two-a-day workouts.

Besides scrimmaging in front of the crowd, the players got to participate in the somewhat dreaded “Oklahoma Drill,” a running/blocking/tackling drill designed to improve players’ contact skills. The drill was performed “up close and personal” in front of the crowd.

The day’s practice concluded with introductions of each of the squad members and the 2010 Captains (more on this later). The practice was followed by a cookout at the Red Bridge Pavillion. The cookout afforded the CPA football families an opportunity to get to know one another better and certainly generated some excitement for the upcoming season.

Thursday and Friday brought the first opportunities for the CPA Patriots to hear and feel the cracks and thuds of helmets and shoulder pads. After conducting their first three workouts in shorts and tee shirts, the Christ Prep football team checked out full gear on Wednesday evening then "strapped it on" Thursday morning. Follow up sessions were held Thursday evening and this (Friday) morning.

The Patriots get this evening off but will be back at it Saturday morning for the team's annual "Patriot Day." Patriot Day will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Red Bridge Baptist Church field. The day's festivities will feature a full contact scrimmage and will conclude with a cookout for team members and families. Don't miss it!

Easier Day For Patriots

After completing five grueling practice sessions in a little over 48 hours, the Christ Prep Patriots get a bit of a break today as tonight's session will be limited to equipment checkout.

Slightly cooler temperatures greeted the team this morning as it completed its 90 minute workout at Red Bridge Baptist Church. The team continued to work on fundamentals and repitition of some of its key offensive plays as it prepares for tomorrow's first day of practice in full gear.

Patriots Practice in Heat, Humidity

The Christ Prep Patriots continued 2-a-day workouts last night amidst extremely hot and humid conditions. As the thermometer approached 100 degrees and the "discomfort index" topped 110 degrees, the Patriots took the field at 6:00 p.m. for their evening workout. The young men stood up well, however, as the team began inserting its offensive scheme while continuing their position-specific drills. The evening's practice was topped off by "Dirty Thirties," which consist of thirty 30-yard dashes.

This morning's practice was cooler and a bit breezy, although notably warmer than yesterday's. Take a look at some pictures from last night's session.

2010 Season Begins For Patriots

It's the first Monday in August, and while others were still sleeping or getting ready for work, 35 young men from Christ Preparatory Academy took the field at 6:30 a.m. to begin anew the annual ritual that is two-a-day football practices. As dawn broke in south Kansas City, Coach David Wallace and his staff of Jay Geeding, Mark Geeding, Tim Hammack and Darrell Wallace greeted the eager Patriots with a variety of conditioning and agility drills at the Red Bridge Baptist Church practice field.

The Patriot squad will conduct workouts Monday through Friday this week at 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. at Red Bridge. The first week's activities culminate in the annual Patriot Day on Saturday, August 7. Patriot Day features the team's first significant contact and is capped off by a cookout and fellowship time for the team and its families.
