Chiefs' Punter Colquitt Visits Patriots Practice

Kansas City Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt made a surprise visit last night at the Christ Prep Patriots' practice. Colquitt arrived just before the Patriots took the field and spent the better part of the evening observing CPA's practice and chatting with players and coaches.

Colquitt spend a good deal of time addressing the Patriots as a group. He discussed how God had used adversity in his life to draw him back to a closer relationship with the Lord. He also discussed the importance of using his position as an NFL player as a platform for sharing his faith. Colquitt challenged the Patriots to take seriously the word "Christ" which is on the front of their practice jerseys and to live in a manner that brings glory to God. He also talked to them about honoring their parents and living lives of strong character.

Colquitt talked about how he came to football relatively late in life. Although his father Craig was also a punter in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dustin grew up playing soccer and basketball and only played football during his senior year in high school when the football team's kicker was injured prior to the season opener. Dustin then handled the kicking and punting duties which eventually led him to spurn a soccer scholarship to Brown University and instead to walk on as a punter at the University of Tennessee. The rest as they say, is history. Dustin went on to have a standout career with the Tennessee Volunteers and was drafted in the third round of the NFL draft in 2005. Currently he boasts a 43.9 yard per game average.

Patriots Beat Wabaunsee 41-0

The Christ Prep Patriots beat the Wabaunsee Chargers 41-0 today at Shawnee Mission North Field.  The contest was the last home game for the CPA and was the team's annual Senior Day. With the win the Patriots are assured of a winning season as the team moved to 6-3 for the campaign.

Christ Prep rode a well balanced attack in chalking up the win. The Patriots scored first half touchdowns on  a Jesse Mann 2 yard run and a 15 yard TD strike from Darren Wallace to Jack Layman. Layman also added a two point conversion on a fake PAT kick. The scoring might have been worse in the first half but the Patriots suffered three turnovers--two interceptions and a fumble--so the scoring was limited to 14-0 at intermission.

CPA hit its stride in the second half, breaking out for another 27 points. During the 3rd Quarter the Patriots pushed in TDs on runs from Wallace and Jared Nield of 1 yard and 3 yards, respectively. One Wallace PAT brought the lead to 27-0 at the end of three periods.

During the 4th quarter the Patriots continued their offensive showcase as Jared Nield scored on a 30 yard run, his longest of the day. Wallace's PAT put the score at 34-0 which ushered in the Patriot JV to wrap up the game.

The JV took over where the varsity left off. Newcomer Tyler Sorrell capped off the CPA scoring with a 1 yard run late in the game. Timothy Finley added the PAT. After a pass intcerception by Zach Hershberger, the Patriots ran out the clock and sealed the victory at 41-0.

Christ Prep amassed over 500 yards total offense en route to today's victory. The Patriots rushed for 404 yards on 58 carries--a 6.97 yard average. Running backs Jesse Mann and Jared Nield turned in almost identical performances. Both had 17 carries with Mann edging Nield in yardage 143-140. Quarterback Darren Wallace rushed for 61 yards on 13 attempts. Each of the three backs had one rushing touchdown. Freshman Tyler Sorrell added another rushing touchdown and had 15 yards on four carries.

The Patriot passing game came through in key situations. Quarterback Darren Wallace was 6-11 for 100 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Two of Wallace's completions were for touchdowns. One was for 15 yards to Jack Layman; the other a 30 yard connection to Nield. Timothy Finley, in relief duty, was 1-1 for a 12 yard completion to Josiah Thill. Besides the receptions mentioned above, Wallace connected with Zach Hersberger and Timothy Finley for catches of eight and four yards, respectively. Jack Layman caught two other Wallace passes as well. Layman totaled three receptions for 58 yards.

Defensively the Patriots held the Chargers scoreless while tallying four interceptions. The four Patriot picks were delivered by Grant Layman, Ezra Boyd, Darren Wallace and Zach Hershberger.  Michael Force once again led the Patriots in tackles. Force brought down seven Chargers on his own while assisting six more times. Ezra Boyd added six solo tackles while Grant Collison added three for the Patriot defense.

With the win, Christ Prep improves to 6-3 on the season while Wabaunsee falls to 1-8. The Patriots conclude the 2010 season next Saturday afternoon in Pleasant Hope, Mo. as they take on the Lighthouse Christian Academy Chargers in a 1:30 p.m. contest. The varsity game follows the junior high game which begins at 11:30 a.m.

Patriots to Host Wabaunsee

The Christ Prep Patriots will host the Wabaunsee Chargers this Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. contest at Shawnee Mission North Field. The game will be CPA's last home game of the year and will feature the annual Senior Day halftime festivities.

Wabaunsee High School, located in Alma, Kansas, makes the trip east with a 1-7 season record (0-5 in the Mid-East Conference).  The Chargers lost last week to the Onaga Buffaloes by a score of 36-7. Christ Prep beat Onaga 41-30 on October 15. Onaga is the only common opponent this season for the Chargers and Patriots.

The Patriots ensured themselves of at least a .500 season record with last week's 53-13 win over Immaculata. CPA, now 5-3, will seek to secure a winning season this week with a victory over Wabaunsee.

Chris Prep 53 Immaculata 13

The Christ Prep Patriots demonstrated a well balanced attack today as the team won easily 53-13 over the Immaculata Raiders.

The play of the day came early in the game from an unlikely but deserving source. Immaculata received the opening kickoff but when faced with fourth down on its first possession chose to go for a first down even though they were deep in their own territory. The Raiders got the first down, but during their very next series LB Ezra Boyd hit the Immaculata QB in the backfield, forcing his pass into the open arms of DL Austin White who promptly returned the interception for a 33 yard touchdown. The Patriot sideline and fans celebrated wildly after witnessing a rare score from a  lineman. Commented Austin after the game: "All of a sudden I realized I was in the end zone with the ball in my hands."

The Patriots added two more touchdowns in the first quarter. The first was a 1 yard TD run by Jesse Mann; the second a 79 yard rush from QB Darren Wallace. Wallace made all three PAT attempts in the first quarter and the period ended with the Patriots up 21-0.

Christ Prep added another touchdown in the second quarter on a 22 yard run from Jared Nield. The PAT attempt failed and the Patriots took a 27-0 lead to the locker room at intermission.

The Patriots broke loose in the third quarter with 26 more points as Wallace connected on 30 yard-plus touchdown strikes to Zach Hersberger and Jack Layman and Jesse Mann found the end zone on two more rushing TDs of 1 and 30 yards, respectively. One Wallace and one Timothy Finley PAT rounded out the third period scoring.

The Patriot JV saw some action late in the third quarter and during the entire fourth quarter. Immaculata broke through the end zone twice during the fourth period and added an extra point to bring their total scoring to 13 points for the day.

Final Score: Patriots 53 Raiders 13.

With the win Christ Prep improves to 5-3 for the campaign as the team prepares for next week's final home game--senior day--against Wabaunsee (Kans.) at a 1:00 p.m. contest at SM North Field.

Patriots Win 41-30 at Onaga

After traling 24-21 at halftime, the Christ Prep Patriots hunkered down defensively and exploded for three second half touchdowns on their way to a 41-30 victory over the Onaga Buffaloes Friday night in Onaga, Kans.

CPA Travels to Onaga

A pair of .500 teams face off tomorrow night as the Christ Prep Patriots travel to Onaga, Kans.  for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Onaga H.S. Buffaloes. Onaga is coming off two straight victories after starting the season 1-3. The Buffaloes evened their record by winning 51-24 against Jackson Heights.

Christ Prep won 41-21 against Uniontown last week after dropping games the previous two weeks against University Academy and Pembroke Hill. The Patriots seek to move back to a winning record for the first time in almost a month.

Onaga is located north and west of Topeka and north and east against of Manhattan. The Buffaloes compete in the Twin Valley Conference. All three of the team's losses have occurred in conference play.
