Mustangs Stomp Patriots 40-20

STILLWELL, KS - The Rock Creek Mustangs came to the Kansas City metro determined to get their first win of the season and it showed.  They stopped the Patriots on their first possession of the game and promptly marched down the field for a 7-0 first quarter lead.  The Patriots Bugatti offense got off to an uncharacteristically slow start and wouldn't have mustered a first down on their first two possessions were it not for Mustang penalties.  Ultimately, the Mustangs proved to be too much for the Patriots in the lightening shortened game by taking charge of the line of scrimmage and cruising to a 40-20 victory.

Rock Creek scored again in the first quarter when Brett Hammett found his fullback Zach Nider in the endzone to keep momentum on their side.  CPA's hopes were resurrected when Cale Thomas blasted Hammett as he threw and Levi Mann intercepted the pass and returned it 15 yards to get the Patriots on the board.

The Mustangs responded!  The Patriots couldn't contain Jackson Goodmiller all night and he rushed around the left end 62 yards to put the Mustangs up 21-6.

Just before halftime, however, the Patriots got their offense going after Cameron Rucker forced a fumble and David Schilling pounced on it. Then Tanner Metzdorf completed four of 5 passes and found Chase Stamatis for a 21 yard touchdown to cut the lead to 21-13.

The Patriot Defense began to solve the Mustang misdirection offense but turnovers and poor special teams set up two more Mustang touchdowns before Metzdorf led the Patriots on their only second half touchdown drive capped off by his own 7 yard run.

Goodmiller blazed around the right side for a 66 yard touchdown with 4 minutes remaining but the Mustangs would not get a chance to kick the extra point because of lightening in the area.  But the weather did not affect the outcome.

As usual, Regan Hurley led the defensive effort with 11 tackles and Schilling had 6 tackles to go with his fumble recovery.  Metzdorf finished 11-30 for 141 yards and 1 TD.  Will Cook led the rushing attack with 76 yards on 11 carries including a 36 yard blast up the middle.

Next week CPA travels to Mound City to take on Jayhawk-Linn who lost tonight 42-0 to Lyndon.

NOTES:

- Matt Dawdy left the game at the end of the first half with a shoulder injury and did not return.

- Metzdorf has thrown for over 100 yards in five of six games this season (exception Oskaloosa).
