Patriots Shut Out Jayhawks 37-0

MOUND CITY, KS - The Christ Prep Patriot Defense didn't need much offensive help to beat the Jayhawk-Linn Jayhawks Friday night but Coach Jim Cook's offense would not be out done.  CPA dominated on a cold, wet night and shut out an opponent for the first time since 2010 by drubbing the Jayhawks 37-0.

David Schilling led the defensive effort with six tackles including a tackle for a loss, a sack, and a pass deflection.  The Patriots also picked off three passes to end the game with a +3 turnover margin.  Gabe Jones, Levi Mann & Chase Stamatis intercepted passes and Will Cook recovered a fumble on a night when Jay Geeding's defense made it's best showing of the season.

Offensively, Metzdorf led a multi-dimensional attack by running for two touchdowns and throwing for two more despite the slippery conditions.  Cook led all rushers with 146 yards, his third 100 yard game of the season.  Isaac Smith had a breakout game as well, accounting for 52 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.  His first score came on an amazing grab in traffic after initially bobbling the ball.  Ethan Moran, back from a knee injury in the first game, made the most of the first reception of his career by scoring from 16 yards out.

The Patriots finish off the public school portion of their schedule with a 4-3 record, an improvement of their 2-5 record during the same stretch last year.

JH Defeats Cair Paravel and Flint Hills Christian

The Christ Prep Junior High Football team notched two victories this week by defeating Cair Paravel 26-6 in a rematch on Tuesday and then traveling to Manhattan, KS for a 28-20 victory over Flint Hills Christian to run their record to 5-1.

Coach Tom Hurley's JH squad dominated Tuesday's contest at Red Bridge Baptist Church.  Jeremy Kucera scored on two long TD runs to give the Patriots a 12-0 lead in the 1st quarter.  Then Conner Wainscott found Colby Metzdorf for a 70 yard TD pass in the second quarter to put the Patriots up 20-0 at the half.

Patriots getting ready for Flint Hills Christian

The Patriots faced stiffer competition at Flint Hills Christian but they were up to the challenge.  CPA scored on their first possession when Kucera broke free on a toss sweep at mid-field and out ran the FHC defenders for an 8-0 lead.  But the Eagles responded with a touchdown with 1:26 remaining in the first half.

Kucera burst around the right side on the ensuing kickoff for a special teams TD but the 2pt try was short giving the Patriots a 14-8 advantage.  On the next play, Grant Stamatis recovered the muffed kickoff setting up a Wainscott to Kucera 30 yard TD.  Then just before the end of the half, Metzdorf intercepted the Eagles to end the first half action with the score CPA 20 FHC 8.

In the 3rd quarter FHC took the opening kick and marched 55 yards for a TD to make it a one possession game.  CPA responded by advancing to the Eagles 15 yard line only to have the drive stall.  Faced with a 4th down and 20 from the 25 yardline Hurley called a halfback pass which caught the Eagles unaware.  Kucera's pass to Carl Oakman was on the money and he walked into the endzone giving Christ Prep a 28-14 cushion after three quarters of play.

The Patriot defense harassed the Eagles all game and was led by Grant Gilkison who notched 4 sacks.  FHC managed another TD but the defense held after that and CPA was able to run out the clock to seal the victory.

Next up for CPA is Leavenworth JH on Tuesday.

Mustangs Stomp Patriots 40-20

STILLWELL, KS - The Rock Creek Mustangs came to the Kansas City metro determined to get their first win of the season and it showed.  They stopped the Patriots on their first possession of the game and promptly marched down the field for a 7-0 first quarter lead.  The Patriots Bugatti offense got off to an uncharacteristically slow start and wouldn't have mustered a first down on their first two possessions were it not for Mustang penalties.  Ultimately, the Mustangs proved to be too much for the Patriots in the lightening shortened game by taking charge of the line of scrimmage and cruising to a 40-20 victory.

Rock Creek scored again in the first quarter when Brett Hammett found his fullback Zach Nider in the endzone to keep momentum on their side.  CPA's hopes were resurrected when Cale Thomas blasted Hammett as he threw and Levi Mann intercepted the pass and returned it 15 yards to get the Patriots on the board.

The Mustangs responded!  The Patriots couldn't contain Jackson Goodmiller all night and he rushed around the left end 62 yards to put the Mustangs up 21-6.

Just before halftime, however, the Patriots got their offense going after Cameron Rucker forced a fumble and David Schilling pounced on it. Then Tanner Metzdorf completed four of 5 passes and found Chase Stamatis for a 21 yard touchdown to cut the lead to 21-13.

The Patriot Defense began to solve the Mustang misdirection offense but turnovers and poor special teams set up two more Mustang touchdowns before Metzdorf led the Patriots on their only second half touchdown drive capped off by his own 7 yard run.

Goodmiller blazed around the right side for a 66 yard touchdown with 4 minutes remaining but the Mustangs would not get a chance to kick the extra point because of lightening in the area.  But the weather did not affect the outcome.

As usual, Regan Hurley led the defensive effort with 11 tackles and Schilling had 6 tackles to go with his fumble recovery.  Metzdorf finished 11-30 for 141 yards and 1 TD.  Will Cook led the rushing attack with 76 yards on 11 carries including a 36 yard blast up the middle.

Next week CPA travels to Mound City to take on Jayhawk-Linn who lost tonight 42-0 to Lyndon.

NOTES:

- Matt Dawdy left the game at the end of the first half with a shoulder injury and did not return.

- Metzdorf has thrown for over 100 yards in five of six games this season (exception Oskaloosa).

CPA Junior High Suffers First Loss of the Season

ST. MARY'S, KS - The Christ Prep junior high football team traveled to St. Mary's Academy and suffered their first defeat of the season 38-24.  CPA falls to 3-1 and the Crusaders continued their unbeaten streak to 5-0.

Jeremy Kucera scored three touchdowns and Colby Metzdorf caught a TD pass from Connor Wainscott to lead the Patriots.

St. Mary's won by getting four touchdowns of 40 yards or more.

Midway Subdues Christ Prep 40-14

OLATHE, KS - It looked like the Patriots were off to a good start when the Midway Vikings received the kickoff, and then promptly fumbled for a turnover.  The Patriots had the ball near the Viking 25 yard line, with and early touchdown within reach but it was not to be.  The Vikings jarred the ball loose from Tanner Metzdorf at the 7 yard line.  Midway recovered and quickly marched down the field for a touchdown that started them on their way to a 40-14 victory and stay undefeated at 6-0.

The Patriots fought back valiantly, but could not overcome the strength, speed and skill of the Vikings.  After having to punt on their next possession, CPA managed to hold the Vikings but on 4th and short Midway's Bobby Zielinski picked up 73 of his game high 114 yards for a demoralizing touchdown.

On their next possession the Patriot offense went three and out and was forced to punt.  The Vikings again were forced in to a 4th down play at midfield.  Quarterback Peyton Semsch found Tanner Yahnig on a screen pass that went the distance.  Vikings 14 Patriots 0.

The bright spot of the game was how the Patriots responded to adversity and kept the game competitive by scoring two second half touchdowns.  Metzdorf found Davis White for a 3rd quarter touchdown pass and then he hit Gabe Jones in stride for a 66 yard score.  Jones tacked on the extra point to make the score 33-14 with 8:31 to play.

CPA falls to 3-2 on the season and hosts Rock Creek in their next game.

43-0 CPA Victory over Pleasanton

GRANDVIEW, MO - Monday evening, the Christ Prep junior varsity team dominated  Pleasanton HS 43-0 in an 8-man game at the Patriots home field at Red Bridge Baptist Church.  The Patriots took the opening possession and marched down the field to take a 7-0 lead with Charlie Davis doing most of the damage by hauling in passes from Chase Stamatis for gains of 14 yards and 24 yards to set up the touchdown catch by Isaac Smith.  Smith also scored on a 3 yard scamper in the 4th quarter.

Seth Nield and Stamatis completed a triple double of sorts with CPA having three players score two touchdowns.  Nield was particularly deadly with long touchdown runs of 20 yards and 60 yards.

CPA continues to be strong defensively.  The shut out was lead by the defensive front of Davis, Cameron Blair, and Josh Maxwell.  Maxwell was one of several players to record multiple tackles for a loss.
