The Christ Prep Patriots traveled back to Mound City, Kansas last night to complete a game suspended by lightning last Friday evening. The return trip was worth the wait, however, as CPA completed the game's final 17 minutes with stellar defense and efficient offense, delivering a 23-14 win.
The only scoring last night was a safety credited to Patriot Cale Thomas who was about ready to recover a fumble in the end zone for a TD when Jayhawk QB Thomas Avery kicked the football out of the back of the end zone. Jayhawk-Linn was penalized on the ensuing free kick for that play and was forced to kick from behind the 10 yard line.
Christ Prep got on the board early Friday night as Chase Stamatis intercepted an early Jayhawk-Linn pass, returning it 26 yards for a touchdown. The ensuing PAT was blocked. Then, after allowing a 56 yard scoring pass from Thomas Avery to Austin Coleman, the Patriots found themselves down 7-6.
CPA came back, however, as Timothy Finley found Davis White for a 15 touchdown strike. The same two connected on a 2-pt conversion and the Patriots led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. After a White interception return for a TD was called back because of a clipping penalty, the Patriots fumbled and the Jayhawks capitalized on a Colt Cummings 2 yard rushing TD which knotted the two teams at 14-all at halftime.
Early in the third quarter a Finley rushing TD was called back because of a helmet-to-helmet contact penalty against the Patriots. The Jayhawks then sustained a fairly long drive but eventually fumbled with CPA recovering. Before the game was suspended, though, Finley once again found White--this time on a 76 yard pass and run for a touchdown. Finley's PAT kick increased the Patriot lead to 21-14 when play stopped Friday.
The Patriots kicked off to Jayhawk-Linn Monday night when play resumed. After starting on their own 20, the Jaywhawks sustained a pretty good drive but were finally forced to punt from mid-field as the third quarter ended. After a Patriot drive stalled Will Cook pinned the Jayhawks deep in their own territory which, combined with excellent CPA defense, led to the safety and the insurance points for Christ Prep.
Christ Prep returns to action Friday evening, hosting Sunrise Christian Academy of Wichita. The game will be senior night for Christ Prep as well as the school's homecoming.
